AOD Mainshaft Gear

The AOD mainshaft in a transmission is one of the three shafts present in the unit, alongside the countershaft and idler shaft. It extends outside the case of the transmission in two directions: the input is toward the engine and the output towards the rear axle, at least in rear wheel drive vehicles. In front wheel drive the engine and transmission are mounted transversely with the differential being part of the transmission unit. The gears and clutch ride on the this shaft, the gears turning freely until they are engaged by the clutch.
