In 2003, Ford made improvements to the 4R70W with features such as more lugs for the output shaft sensor to read off of, a new torque converter, a new front pump assembly, and a vehicle speed sensor. These help improve the shift quality and efficiency. These changes allowed the next model, the 4R75W, to handle more power while still being as economical as possible. Any of these series that has throttle installed by wire is referred to as a 4R70E or 4R75E. Other modifications of these electronic models include a more powerful microprocessor and a turbine speed sensor.
